Yenna pa mayakkam ithu? ( What is this trance? )

video

This is my first song that I uploaded in You-Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXb9KNj5sug), it is a Tamil song from the movie Mayakkam Enna by Selvaraghavan. The song has been sung by G.V.Prakash Kumar & Saindhavi.

This is also my first blog about a song.

I liked the movie in bits and pieces. But the timing of this particular song in the movie, its lyrics, its music, its tone and everything related to it, had left me mesmerized for a while.

I thought I would share my experience with you, by running you through a portion of the song that mixes its chorus, verse and climb. May be I would update this blog with the complete song, including the second chorus, bridge and coda.

So, if you have followed me till here then I hope I don't let you down.

Okay, Now if you had played the video in the beginning, you would have known that I uploaded only the portion of the song that I am going to discuss and, also that I have added some pictures to give you visual cues through the song.

First Picture & the music sync:
Pirai Thedum Iravilae Uyirae - In a night, when searching for a crescent is the right endeavor.

The Picture expresses the stages of the moon (graphically included; as you would know this view is not possible in our mother earth. May be possible in Jupiter, but I don't think I will ever go there.) disappearing before the dawn.

The singer is asking a question, of which one half is the first line. "In a night, when you should be searching for a curvy crescent" or any other stage of the moon. Moon in itself depicts beauty, the face of your beloved and so on. As you may know that many of our ancestor-poets have claimed to have seen the face of their beloved in the reflection of the moon.

The second half of the question, is the second line.

Second Picture & the music sync:
Ethai Thedi Alaigiraai - What are you seeking around?
The Picture expresses two tall buildings ( please take a note, that I took this snap in the downtown of Chicago during broad day light. I will let your imagination fill in on the specifics of how I could have done it. ) in a sunny morning, of which one is blocking the sun and the other is reflecting the sun light.

The image depicts the pursuit of modern man, seeking wealth in the form of money and possessions. Building skyscrapers and altering nature, only to make himself more miserable in the end than he was in the beginning.

The singer completes her question by asking the modern man, "What exactly are you seeking around?" Do you really need, what you are seeking? Do you know what you will do after your quest is over?

Third Picture & the music sync:
Kathai Solla Azhaikiraen Uyirae - O Beloved, I am seeking you to tell a story.
The Picture expresses two lovers ( they are the cast from the movie, Dhanush and Richa who looks a little like Tanushree Datta. I am glad to have got this pics to be added to my video ) happily conversing with each other in a field, probably during sunset (similar to DDLJ? No.).

The image depicts the eagerness of the singer to convey a story to her beloved. Making him laugh during a cool breezy evening walk whilst, allowing him to think for himself and make the right choice for their future.

Fourth Picture & the music sync:
Anbae Nee Vaa - Please come dear.

The Picture expresses a passionate photographer ( dhanush is an aspiring wild life photographer in the movie ) trying to capture a fleeting opportunity that may or may not arrive.

The image depicts the modern man with his blinders, competing earnestly in the rat race. The singer is pleading her beloved to listen to her and to come out of the mesmerized state he is in; because the rat race is only a lure, laid out by the seducing siren's of the modern world.

Fifth Picture & the music sync: (Thumbnail picture)
Irulil Kanneerum Etharku - Why the tears in the dark (night) ?

 .
The Picture expresses a mesmerized photographer ( Dhanush has just sighted a very beautiful scene and is lost for thought, he will later take a snap and show it to his God like Idol. Who instead of mentoring him, would belittle his work and then take credit for the same work. Thus jeopardizing Dhanush's life. ) who is lost in his quest to please his taskmaster..
The image depicts the modern man completely submerged in his thoughts to complete the task at hand and prove that he is the best in the lower rung to the person in the higher rung of the same professional ladder.

The singer is asking her beloved, why he wants to cry in the night? Men usually don't express their fears, struggles and short comings. They disappear into the dark and cry out loud. The darkness to which the singer's beloved goes to depicts the modern world where we sit in air conditioned and well lit work-locations and never see the sun light.

Sixth Picture & the music sync:
Madiyil Kanmooda Vaa - To close your eyes on my lap?

The Picture expresses a man ( Sundar's acting in this movie is extra ordinary, he shows the essence of being a true friend of Dhanush for the entire movie ) who assists his good friend, who is in an intoxicated state and needs him now more than ever because he is in an inexpressible pain caused by a twist in the movie.
The image depicts the modern man struggling between his professional and personal life, both of which are in a miserable state like his mind. In dire circumstances, when the modern man is out of steam, he goes to his closest of friends and tries to regain control of his wobbling life.
The singer is asking her beloved, why he wants to struggle in the professional life? and then come back to his personal life to rejuvenate? An inherent question being, what if his personal life is struggling too? This is the reason she asks initially in this portion of the song, "What exactly are you seeking around?" Do you really need, what you are seeking? Do you know what you will do after your quest is over or when the obstacles seem insurmountable?

Seventh Picture & the music sync:
Azhakae Intha Sogam Etharku - O Beauty, why such sadness?
Naan Un Thaayum Allavaa - am I not your mother too?

The Picture expresses a lady ( Richa's acting in the movie is an inspiration to all women kind ) who is surprised, saddened, thinking and questioning.

The image depicts the support of a strong individual, who always backs you, always cheers for you, always celebrates for you, always lives for you ...
The singer is asking her beloved, why such sadness? why such struggle? why such desperation which would lead to disheartening of oneself? She also asks him, shouldn't she worry for him like his mother? shouldn't she care for him like his mother? isn't she also his mother, when he behaves as a child?

Eighth Picture & the music sync:
Unakkena Mattum Vaazhum Ithayamadee - This heart lives only for you.

Uyir Ulla Varai Naan Un Adimaiyadee - Till my last breath I am your slave.
